Peak Pergolas was set up to do one thing well: design and build outdoor structures for homes across Box Hill and the City of Whitehorse, from Box Hill North and Blackburn to Mitcham, Vermont and Burwood. Pergolas, verandahs, patios and carports are the whole focus. The work ranges from gable patios on post-war brick homes and replacements for tired 1970s pergolas, to decks with pergolas on sloping blocks and clear or louvre roofs that keep a shaded yard light. Whitehorse is one of the wetter parts of Melbourne, with about 850 mm of rain a year, so every structure is built around water first: proper roof fall, gutters sized for the roof and downpipes connected to the stormwater.

Each job runs the same way. It starts with a free measure, where the house, the fascia and eave heights, the roof pitch, the window and door heads, the fall of the ground and the path for stormwater are recorded and the options are talked through. A written, itemised quote follows, so every part of the price can be seen. Once accepted, drawings and engineering are prepared, overlays are checked on Whitehorse Maps and the building permit is lodged. The structure is then built, inspected at each stage required by the building surveyor and handed over with the site cleaned up.

The same team that measures the house draws the structure and builds it, so the heights, falls and fixings agreed on site are the ones built on the day. Work around large trees, on sloping blocks and on older homes with uneven fascias is planned at the drawing stage rather than worked out on site. Footings are sized to a soil test under AS 2870, posts sit on galvanised stirrups or base plates above the concrete, and roofs are fixed to the spacing the engineering calls for.

Every structure that needs one is built under a building permit issued by a registered building surveyor. Whitehorse City Council's rules require a permit for any structure attached to the house, any roof over 10 square metres, anything forward of the front wall and taller structures near a boundary, and every carport in Victoria needs one. Footing, beam and wind engineering is prepared for each design. Where a property has a heritage, neighbourhood character, flood or landscape overlay, the planning permit is dealt with before the building permit. Frames are galvanised steel, powder-coated aluminium, or hardwood and treated pine, with Colorbond, polycarbonate, insulated or louvre roofs.
